What’s On: Gold Coast Summer Coastal Sports Guide

When it comes to sports and tournaments on the Gold Coast, 2018 is shaping up to be one of the hottest on record. From world championship surfing to local and amateur events and the spectacle that is the Commonwealth Games, you can find it all here in our essential guide to sport on the Gold Coast.

2018 Burleigh Pro Surf Event

In 2018 this world famous surfing meet gets even bigger, with an extra day added to the proceedings. Running between January 25 and January 28, the Burleigh Pro attracts some of the best talent in the world, set against Burleigh Heads, which is the best place for punters to catch all the action. Quicksilver and Roxy Pro

Top surfers from around the world including Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore and Owen and Tyler Wright will come together to battle it out for a huge prize and world title points in the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro.

Running from the 11th until the 22nd of March, this premier surfing event takes place at the Snapper Rocks point break, and marks the opening of the world championship tours for men’s and women’s events.

Gold Coast Triathlon

The Luke Harrop Memorial caps off Queensland’s best annual triathlon weekend. Taking place on the 25th of February, there are three events targeted at different age groups of athletes.

Cross Country Mountain Biking World Series

Taking place on the 13th and 14th of January 2018, rounds 3 and 4 of the MTBA world series present an action packed mountain biking adventure. It’s also the only chance you’ll get to see the run in use prior to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Taking place in the beautiful Nerang National Park, competitors from Class 3, Elite and Junior Men’s and Women’s UCI classes will all be in attendance.

Learn to Surf

With mile after mile of beaches there’s no better place on earth to learn to surf. Budding longboarder can check out Get Wet Surf School, who offer up a two hour beginner’s course at locals favourite The Spit. Get Wet provided all the equipment and free transfers to and from your hotel. So what are you waiting for?

Beach Volleyball

With miles of sand and glittering beaches for a backdrop, Beach Volleyball is one of the best sports on the Gold Coast. The Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour is the state’s highest competition, with events taking place up and down the coast throughout the summer. Broadwater Parklands

If you’re looking for more casual sporting endeavours why not check out Broadwater Parklands. With plenty of space for a family picnic, a regular calendar of events and plenty of access to fun watersports like kayaking and paddle board, there’s something for everyone in Broadwater.


In 2017 Gold Coast played host to the national Kiteboarding League Grand Final. If you’re running high off that event and keen to learn more about this popular sport you can grab lessons at SkyHigh Kitesurfing.

Sand Safari Arts Festival

While it might not have the immediacy of most other beach sports, the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships still draw thousands of spectators every year to admire, photograph and be inspired by the Gold Coast’s best sand sculpture artists.

The Sand Safari Arts Festival also boasts plenty of other entertainment over the 17 day festival. Running from 9-25th of February, you’ll discover inflatable art, free book readings by the Sand Safari mermaid, swim school for kids and all manner of mythical creatures. Magic Millions Racing Carnival

Over 10 incredible days, Australia’s premier summer racing carnival turns the Gold Coast into equestrian wonderland. Kicking off on the 7th of January with Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo, race day is the following Saturday the 13th. Don your best duds and head to the track for a $10 million race day, as well as Fashions On The Field and the glamour of the Magic Millions VIP Marquee.

Yugioh Regional Qualifiers

In the world of competitive card gaming, the path to the world championships starts here. Players will look to secure their place in the Oceania tournament in the hopes of taking the step up to the world stage. Taking place on the 3rd of March at the Dark Magician Superstore, players can secure their place by booking their tickets through the event page on Facebook.


Taking place on St Patrick’s Day (March 17) Bowlzilla caps off the summer with a premier skateboarding event. Already in its third year, Bowlzilla showcases the dynamic art of park and bowl skating. A chance to meet, network, compete and support local skaters, Bowlzilla is a must for any skateboarder, pro or casual. Check out more information here.  

Commonwealth Games 2018 Gold Coast

The sporting event of Australia in 2018, Gold Coast will host the biggest Commonwealth Games yet. With Australia looking to break records in many events. It all kicks off with an opening ceremony on the 4th of April. So grab some tickets, break out the green and gold and get ready for this once in a lifetime event.
